How to Justify text in WordPress 4.7 & How to Underline Text in WP 4.7 ?
Well, as you know, WordPress 4.7 has come out. And there is a ton of goodness that comes our way in this newest version. Cool things like:
- A New Default Theme
- User Admin Languages
- PDF Thumbnails
And for those who dabble in CSS (or perhaps, the hardcore developer):
- Custom CSS ad Live Previews
- REST API Content Endpoints
And there are always tons of other fixes that come with each release.
But, Guess What Happened in the Editor?
Now this may not be huge to most people, but having worked with thousands of beginners, it’s notable to me. Since I began giving workshops and teaching WordPress in 2010, when I went through the editor tools, I have consistently told my clients and students two things over those six years:
Ignore the Underline and Justification Tools
So, first justification. Full justification was okay in the days of print, although, even then it was considered harder to read. But when it crept into websites, the stuff hit the fan. I can honestly say that full justification on the web always sucked. Spreading out letters to fill in areas often made things totally unreadable. No more to be said here.
Secondly, underlines. When I shared my frustration with underlined text, I would always hear moans and groans. Mostly because people liked underling titles and using it to emphasize text. But guess what? Over all this time it was nothing but a problem. Why? Because people consider underlined text to be a link. Yes, a link. In fact, I can tell you waaaaaaaay back when I used it sparingly, often I would get emails telling me that I had links that were not working on my site. What a pain.
What you see here:
Is gone in WordPress 4.7.
Now some of you may be a little sad about the underlines. You really did like them, even if they caused confusion. You will still be able to get it with a keyboard shortcut, which I refuse to share, but it will be there. And consider bold and italicizefor text emphasis.
And if we are lucky, maybe next version there will be a warning box when you try to use it:
Warning: Using underlines will confuse your readers.
