Update on Mohawk College Faculty Strike By President
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union served notice late this afternoon that it will be taking college faculty out on a province-wide strike beginning Monday, October 16th. The union has rejected the final offer from the bargaining team representing Ontario’s 24 colleges.
No student at an Ontario college has ever lost their year due to a strike. Mohawk will make sure that all students get the opportunity to complete their semester.
During a strike, all full-time programs will be suspended and students will be asked not to contact their professors.
The Fall Convocation Ceremony scheduled for Friday, Oct. 20th will be postponed. Credentials will still be conferred on students who are graduating this month.
Mohawk and the OPSEU Local will be meeting to agree on picket line protocol to ensure everyone’s continued safety.
Currently, we do not expect the following to be impacted during the strike.
Co-op work terms and field placements will continue.
Continuing Education classes and Ontario Learn will continue.
eLearn will continue to be available to students.
All three campuses will remain open with normal hours of operation.
Labs will remain open.
Student Services will remain open.
Varsity athletics will continue.
Students will continue to work at on-campus jobs, although schedules and hours may change for students employed by the Mohawk Students’ Association.
During a strike, you are encouraged to catch up on any course work, readings and assignments and review material that has been a challenge. Peer tutoring, our math and writing centres and other supports will be available during and after the strike.
While a province-wide strike is disappointing, we ask that you continue to treat your professors and all faculty at Mohawk with respect.
